Brent crude rises 13% and energy shares rally after reported U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran
Reported strikes on Iran lifted crude and energy shares. LNG exporters and producers led, and refiners lagged on higher input costs.
A strike on Iran's leadership raises the risk of retaliation and of lost oil supply from the Gulf. Crude prices rise when supply is at risk, and a higher crude price improves the earnings outlook for producers and LNG exporters.
USO holds crude oil futures, so it tracks the oil price itself. XLE holds energy company shares, so it tracks producer profits and expectations.
Watch next: The next evidence is whether Iran strikes Gulf energy facilities or slows traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, because that decides whether the crude price move reflects lost barrels or only fear. A second target is any confirmed change in Iran's leadership, because that would change the retaliation risk in either direction.
IonQ prices a $2.0 billion equity offering days after a $1.3 billion all-stock Elisity deal; IONQ falls 6% and quantum peers fall 4%
IonQ priced a $2.0 billion stock and warrant offering after its Elisity deal. IONQ fell about 6%, and quantum peers fell about 4% with it.
New shares and warrants dilute existing owners, and the money funds a company that is not yet profitable at scale. Investors also treat quantum computing as one trade, so a large IonQ raise pulled peer share prices down at the same time.
IonQ sells quantum computing hardware, networking, sensing and security products. The company is not yet profitable at scale, so it funds development with investor money.
Watch next: The SEC prospectus supplement should give the share count before and after the offering, the fee paid to J.P. Morgan, and the use of proceeds.
NiSource signs a 20-year agreement to supply Microsoft's Indiana data center campus with about 1,100 MW from 2028
Large artificial intelligence data centers need firm electricity at one site for many years, and new generation and grid connections take years to build. Microsoft pays for all generation and transmission that serves its load, and NiSource says those assets also upgrade the NIPSCO transmission system and shield existing customers from the cost of serving the campus.
NiSource is a fully regulated utility with about 3.3 million natural gas customers and 500,000 electric customers in six states. It sells under the Columbia Gas and NIPSCO brands and has about 7,700 employees.
Watch next: The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission must approve the GenCo contract with Microsoft, and the 16 October release gives no timetable. The next evidence is the IURC filing and order, plus the disclosure of the power price, contract value, capital cost and financing plan.
Lockheed Martin invests $300 million to expand its Grand Prairie, Texas missile plant
Lockheed Martin will spend $300 million to expand its Grand Prairie missile plant and add nearly 100 machines by the end of 2026, to meet higher missile output targets.
Demand, not cost cutting, drives the spend. Since January the Defense Department has signed framework agreements with Lockheed that set much higher missile output targets, and the company must add floor space and machines to meet them.
This is a capacity story inside a long munitions upcycle. Lockheed already holds unusually large framework agreements that set the required output, and the $300 million site spend is the physical response to those targets.
Watch next: Watch whether the new machines and the Hadrian lines start by early 2027, and whether the missile framework agreements convert into funded orders at the promised rates, roughly 2,000 PAC-3 MSE interceptors a year and four times current THAAD output.
Eight AI-compute and bitcoin-linked names fell 10% or more together.
These names belong together because they depend on the same two themes: AI computing capacity and bitcoin mining. NBIS sells AI compute and is racing contracted demand against the cash needed to serve it.
Watch next: Watch the next funding and operating evidence. Concrete targets are credit spreads for CoreWeave-linked leased paper, any Nebius financing or capacity update, and bitcoin mining production or power cost reports.
Watch next: The next evidence is Micron's quarterly report and guidance on memory prices and on remaining performance obligations, which is contracted revenue not yet delivered. Memory contract prices and any update on the AI memory supply agreements are the other targets.
Watch next: The next evidence is Sandisk's quarterly report with NAND contract price and volume disclosures, plus current-quarter memory industry price data.
Watch next: The next evidence is Lumentum's quarterly results and any update on shipments under the NVIDIA purchase commitment, plus AI data center capital spending guidance from the large cloud buyers.
